Confession of sin

L: If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Silence is kept for Reflection and Self Examination)

L: Let us bow and confess our sins before the Lord our God.

C: Almighty God, our maker and Redeemer; we poor sinners confess unto you, that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved you with all our hearts, we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

Wherefore we flee for refuge to your infinite mercy seeking and imploring your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

L: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us of all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of the church of Christ and by His authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Hymn

(Hymnal book no.858)

1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Come, all who hear; now to his temple draw near,
join me in glad adoration.

2 Praise to the Lord, above all things so wondrously reigning;
sheltering you under his wings, and so gently sustaining!
Have you not seen all that is needful has been
sent by his gracious ordaining?

3 Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you;
surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
if with his love he befriends you.

4 Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him.
Let the Amen sound from his people again;
gladly forever adore him.

Psalm

(Rikaya will read in Hausa)

Psalm 111

Praise for God’s Wonderful Works

1 Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,  in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

2 Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.

3 Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.

4 He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;  the Lord is gracious and merciful.

5 He provides food for those who fear him;  he is ever mindful of his covenant.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the heritage of the nations.

7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy.

8 They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

9 He sent redemption to his people;  he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;  all those who practice it[a] have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

Amén.

WORD

First Reading

(Bertha will read it in Chechiwa)

Isaiah 55:1-12

45 Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him— and the gates shall not be closed:

2 I will go before you and level the mountains; I will break in pieces the doors of bronze  and cut through the bars of iron;

3 I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord,  the God of Israel, who call you by your name.

4 For the sake of my servant Jacob and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name; I give you a title, though you do not know me.

5 I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me,

6 so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me;  I am the Lord, and there is no other.

7 I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe;  I the Lord do all these things.

8 Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation may spring up, and let it cause righteousness to sprout up also; I the Lord have created it.

9 Woe to those who strive with their Maker, earthen vessels with the potter! Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, “What are you making”? or “Your work has no handles”?

10 Woe to anyone who says to a father, “What are you fathering?” or to a woman, “With what are you in labor?”

11 Thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israel and its Maker: Will you question me about my children or command me concerning the work of my hands?

12 I made the earth and created humankind upon it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.

Response

L: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

Second Reading

(Sten will read in Danish)

Revelation 7:9-12

The Multitude from Every Nation

9 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying,

“Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb!”

11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 singing,

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Response

L: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

C: Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

(Levente will read it in Hungarian)

Luke 24:13-35

The Walk to Emmaus

13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[f] from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad.[g] 18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” 19 He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth,[h] who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.[i] Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23 and when they did not find his body there they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.” 25 Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah[j] should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us[k] while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Hymn of the Day

ELW 779  (Aneeta and Fredrik to Lead)

1 Amazing grace!– how sweet the sound–
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
was blind, but now I see.

2 ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!

3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come;
‘tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

4 The Lord has promised good to me;
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

5 When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
than when we’d first begun.

Apostles Creed

(John will lead in Kikuyu, everybody in english or mother tongue)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer

(by Elena)

God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

Great thanksgiving

(by Suryani)

The Lord be with you.                                And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.                                     We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.    It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Preface

(by Suryani)

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you our Lord, in Jesus Christ: for in the Holy Baptism You called us into Your marvelous light, forgiving all our sins and clothing us with His righteousness. And now, at this Holy Table, You confirm that promise. Here, we receive the body and blood of Your Son, which strengthens our faith and reaffirms the forgiveness of sins achieved through His sacrifice and first granted to us in our Baptism.

Therefore, with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

(by Suryani)

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Words of Institution

(by Sonja)

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

(by Timo)

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Lords Prayer

3. Affirmation of Christian vocation

by David

Sisters and brothers both your work and your rest are in God. In our time together, we have:

Shared in the fellowship of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Celebrated his promises made through the waters of Baptism,

Received the nourishment of his own body and blood offered through bread and wine,

Prayed for one another, supported one another, laughed together, cried together, and learned together.

Now, as we prepare to leave this place and return to our households, communities, and places of service, I ask: Will you endeavor to pattern your life on the Lord Jesus Christ, in gratitude to God and in service to others, at morning and evening, at work and at play, all the days of your life?

Response: I will, and I ask God to help me.

The minister continues.

Almighty God our Father, by the power of your Holy Spirit you have knit us—your servants—into the one body of your Son, Jesus Christ. Look with favor upon us in our commitment to serve in Christ’s name. Give us courage, patience, and vision; strengthen us all in our Christian vocation of witness to the world and of service to others; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
